Momo

Another popular Nepalese dish that was brought to the UK by Nepalese immigrants is Momos. Momos are steamed dumplings that are filled with a mixture of meat or vegetables and spices.

Here is a recipe for Nepalese Momos:

Ingredients for the dough:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • 1/4 cup warm water

  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil

Ingredients for the filling:

  • 1 lb ground meat (chicken, beef, or pork) or mixed vegetables

  • 1 large onion, diced

  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced

  • 1 inch of ginger, grated

  • 1 tsp cumin powder

  • 1 tsp coriander powder

  • 1 tsp garam masala

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • Fresh coriander, chopped

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, mix together the flour and salt.

  2. Add the warm water and oil and knead the mixture into a soft and elastic dough.

  3. Cover the dough and let it rest for 10-15 minutes.

  4. In a pan, sauté the onion until soft, about 5 minutes.

  5. Add the garlic, ginger, and spices and cook for another minute.

  6. Add the ground meat or vegetables and cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes.

  7. Stir in the chopped cilantro and season with salt and pepper to taste. Set aside to cool.

  8. Roll the dough into thin circles, about 3-4 inches in diameter.

  9. Place a spoonful of the filling in the centre of each circle.

  10. Fold the dough over to form a half-moon shape and pinch the edges to seal.

  11. Place the momos in a steamer basket and steam until they are cooked through, about 10-15 minutes.

  12. Serve the momos hot with a dipping sauce of your choice.
